Students at our school in the upper grades are finsihing a unit on weight transfer, balance, and safety. One of our culminating activities is a student and teacher created obstacle course center. Our students have the option of traveling thorugh the course as practice or as a competition against the clock. We have students time each other using a smartphone and then the students digitally record their names/scores on a nearby Ipad. The results are shared with the classroom teacher and they can use this “real” data to help enhance their classroom learning
Our 4th and 5ht grade students are learning how to explore elapsed time using everyday events, such as; reading a bus schedule, estimating the time it takes to travel on a trip, and determining the amount of time spend at a stoplight. This fits in nicely when the students use estimation to determine how long they think it will take them to travel around the course and with them being able to organize data in a variety of graphic displays including frequency tables, line plots, stem and leaf plots, bar graphs, line graphs, and circle graphs. They will also decide which data display is best for displaying certain data. Students will analyze and interpret their physical education data displays. Students will also compute the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, and range) to draw conclusions about data.
Motivation VERY HIGH–try it. Our students really enjoy it.
Enjoy! Please provide feedback or any comments.
Thank you,
Tom
