This is how we end the year with our K-6 students for Special Areas – A Triple Crown Event of races! Grade levels come together for specials over the remaining 3 days of classes and race together. For K-2 it is simply one race after another and going multiple times. For 3-6 there is an ultimate winner for the grade level after practice and then racing. The display of sportsmanship, respect, and support for each other never ceases to amaze me!
Race 1 – The Dario Derby, named after our school’s first plant foreman (head of maintenance) who was previously a horse jockey. Spin the rope using a pool noodle, not hands, to spin the rope all the way up and around. We put a clothespin at the end so you know when you’ve spun it up.
Race 2 – El Toro, named after our mascot. Start with both feet out and then when it starts put at least one foot in to move the hula hoop forward. Cannot use hands. For 3-6 grades a DQ occurs if the hoop slings forward off your foot before finishing the race creating an advantage.
Race 3 – The Union Park Stakes, named after our school. Balance the ball on a frisbee with one hand fully underneath. For 3-6 grades, a DQ occurs if the ball falls off or you pin the ball using your hand or other parts of the body before the race is over.
