This is a culminating activity for 4th & 5th grades. Students have previously been taught how to serve and volley with badminton racquets using a progression from fluff/yarn balls up to birdies.
We have discussed how to keep score, but many students struggle with the concept that only the serving team can keep points. They want whichever team did not “mess up” to be awarded a point. I use the a combination of the volleyball lines and basketball lines to form the boundaries for our games.
One of the biggest obstacles in playing a game like this with elementary students is working with them to not bicker with each other over things like if the birdie is in or out, who gets the point, did the birdie fall on their side or the other side. I emphasize the importance of sportsmanship and having fun while doing activity to help you stay fit.
